Power protection
All servers with Salesware data files should have an Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS). At minimum, the database server and the ProtoBase server (or other credit card server) MUST have a UPS. If the data files on the server are open by Pool Service or SysManager, the danger of data file corruption is very high when power outages occur.
Battery backup systems come with several options. One option is a simple manual battery that provides battery power when the regular power is disrupted. When the power in the battery is exhausted, the server shuts down abruptly, even if files are open. This is similar to a computer crash and so does not help you if the power goes out at 10:00 PM and your battery dies at 2:00 AM. Manual UPS systems need human intervention to conduct an orderly shutdown. Salesware users with manual backup power systems should close Sales and SysManager during periods when no one is available to conduct an orderly server shutdown. Simple UPS systems should really only be used at your salespoints, because they are the least likely computers to cause problems if they have a hard crash when the battery runs out, especially if the Sales application is not open.
The second option is a Smart UPS. These systems communicate with the computer to which they provide emergency power. Software running on the computer monitors the state of the battery power and has the ability to close applications and shut down the computer in an orderly manner. Network administrators need to be aware of what type of power backup system they have and plan their shutdown and recovery plans accordingly. Smart power supplies require periodic testing and configuration to assure they have the correct information to complete an orderly system shutdown. Siriusware Inc. very strongly recommends the use and monitoring of Smart UPS systems on any data server (i.e., database server, E-Commerce server, etc.)
Note: accesso requires a smart UPS on the database server AT MINIMUM.
