Retail : Introduction

Introduction

The Retail module in Salesware version 4.3 has complete retail sales and inventory control features including POs, receiving, adjustments and transfers, vendor information and integrated inventory reporting. The Sales interface has all of the features found in other Sales configurations and is generally set up to take advantage of barcode scanning for item selection.
The approach to retail in Salesware is transactional. Instead of keeping track of current inventory levels by storing and updating a single number somewhere, Salesware instead calculates by adding up all of the inventory transactions.  Inventory levels in the system are increased by adding transactions through purchase orders or inventory adjustments.  Inventory levels are decreased by selling items or by making inventory adjustments.  Here’s an example of how that might work:

Date

Method

Inventory Batch

01/16/13

As you can see, Salesware counts inventory transactions to come up with inventory level. Salesware doesn’t simply store a number somewhere.

Note: While transactions are dated, it is the ultimate count on the day of the calculation that matters. The above could just as well have been in the following order with the same results:

Date
   Item
Method
Qty
01/13/13
Logo Hat
Sale Transaction

01/14/13

There are two processes involved. One, is the creation of the inventory item in the system and the other, is the creation of transactions representing inventory additions and subtractions.
