Key differences between validating with a DCI and auto-validation
Validation with a DCI can result in a single pass DCI being used to authorize (validate) the purchase of an unlimited number of items (validation products); on the other hand, auto-validation in Sales is restricted to the auto-sale of a single item.
The key to remembering the difference between auto-validation programs and programs that involve validating with a DCI is the order in which the sale proceeds:
• Auto-validation – An operator scans a barcode or swipes a card which results in an action (auto-sale of an item in Sales or entrance to a restricted area with remote scanning tools). All rules for what to do with the values of the auto-validated ticket or pass are contained within the Create Access Record check box > Template button or Create Pass radio button > Action Specifics button.
Note: While it is certainly possible to use a standard Salesware salespoint running Sales to control access to a restricted area instead of using a ScanMan or GateKeeper solution, there are very few applications for this configuration because the cost of a salespoint is greater than that of a standard scanning solution.
• Validation with a DCI – An operator manually adds an item (validation product) to a sale, and then authorizes the purchase of the item (or discount) with the entry of a pass record. All rules for what to do with the values of the pass entered for the validation are contained within the Validation Template of the item requiring the validation.
